Percussion Demo 2008

This percussive reel  displays a great deal of my custom percussion recordings. I have been recording custom percussion samples for several years using a variety of different techniques (ex. solo percussion with two sticks, ensemble percussion with 10 sticks, exotic/home made percussion etc). The majority of the percussion samples have been sampled between 6-20 velocity layers and between 5-10 repetition pr. layer. All the custom percussion has been recorded in halls, since the natural reflection of a hall brings a variety of dynamics to the instruments that cannot be reproduced with artificial/algorithmic reverbs.

Enjoy.

Wonderful! All that hard work sampling those instruments has paid off. Nice use of glitch in the electronic portion.

Thanks guys. I always had a weakness for epic percussion, so been spending quite some time getting the right samples and techniques together. I know I can push it further, but for the first time ever I am actually happy with the sound of it. It really comes down to intensity in the recording sessions. The last session we pretty much dented all the drums and broke 11 sticks in one session. There is a nasty “translation issue” when it comes to samples. If you record something in forte – it becomes mezzo forte and/or piano – once it enters the sample realm. So you have to give it an extra notch in the session, which often means pushing it right to the max. Anyway … I will upload some more stuff soon.

  5. Mad respect from a fellow beat monkey.

Even more mad respect back to you. I am baffled that the supreme master of beats would ever write on my humble blog. Thanks man!

I keep listening to this track lately. It has such strenght it inspires me so much. I think the Tomb Raider soundtracks lacked a bit of this destructive stuff, like pushing everything to the limits. I don’t know how to explain… Anyway, Troels, AMAZING work! Thanks for sharing.
