A few more TRA (music) reviews

“… The first thing I recognised was the opening music in all its glory. Of course, the music has been given a little bit of a Twenty-First Century spruce up, but nothing major enough to distract you from the familiar, heart warming sounds. And another familiar sound is the sound of the wolf, howling in the tombs…”

“… As for the games sound, Anniversary has a great soundtrack that still manages to make you feel like you’re playing an epic adventure. With a sweeping score that plays well throughout the game, its the sound effects that add something new to exploration…”

“… Music and sound effects play an integral part to achieving the atmosphere and isolation in Anniversary. Lara often is left is relative silence whilst she raids her way towards her objective. Events in the game often trigger some music. Whether thats encountering the occasional enemy or compounding the effect of entering a new area of the level for the first time. This is incredibly effective and the sparing use of music definitely means less is more in this case. This serves well to ensure you feel it’s just Lara and a bit of disgruntled wildlife on each level…”

“… Unlike most games, the music and sounds here are kept to a minimum; when traversing environments, players will only hear nominal effects through environmental objects such as water. However, when players are engaged in combat, the music shifts into high gear; this prompts a sense of urgency from the player and goes a long way towards maintaining interest in the experience…”

“…The soundtrack is top quality, with Legend composer Troels B. Folmann returning to knock together a few tunes that all add to the epic feel of the game. If youre interested you can check out a few samples on the official site. Finally the sound effects all have some nice bass to them with the individual traps all having a unique sound to let you know what’s coming…”

“…The atmosphere of the original Tomb Raider was vastly different from some of the later games, and that has been reproduced in Anniversary. Here, you are alone most of the time and with a slow, brooding soundtrack, youll feel truly lost, buried in some ruins hundreds of miles from any real civilization…”

“…It’s also a really great-sounding game. You’ll hear plenty of small ambient effects like animal calls and dripping water, and Laras grunts and yelps as she scales these incredible antiquities will resonate differently depending on the size of the room. Music is generally used sparingly, but it always swells to a flourish at all the right moments…”

“…Many of us have seen the “enhanced” remakes of classic Japanese RPGs on todays portable consoles – often those have the same gameplay and story but with new sounds, music, and re-done sprite graphics. This remake goes way, way beyond that to totally revolutionize the original Tomb Raider and truly make it modern again, 10+ years later. With great gameplay, devious but doable spatially-oriented puzzles, the occasional quick action sequences, moody dynamic music, and a nearly worry-free experience on the PC…”

Tomb Raider Legend TEC nominated

I just learned that the Tomb Raider Legend received a nomination at the upcoming 23rd Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 at the New York Marriott Marquis – also known as the TEC award. It is the first year that they are awarding interactive productions and the competition is insane, since the game is competing against Gears of War, God of War 2, GRAW 2, COD 3 – which are all excellent games with excellent audio.

A few early TRA (music) reviews

“…brooding soundtrack that fits perfectly with the dynamic ebb and flow with the action. You might not even notice the discordant ambience while you’re desperately pulling off a death-defying series of jumps, but now and then you’ll sit back and soak it all up and appreciate that palpable effort has gone into making it the best game it could be…

“…For all intents and purposes this is a new Tomb Raider game. Even if you played the original several times, chances are you won’t remember its structure. You should remember its theme music though and I was glad it greeted me in the menu, albeit in a re-imagined state of course…”

“…But a review cannot convey Troels Folmann’s part in all of this. His score simply amplifies the challenge to dizzying heights, and first time round we simply sat there stunned, eyeballs glazed, hearts thumping hard and hands involuntarily twitching on the mouse as we tried to defeat him. We got the scaly bugger second time round… BAFTA Award-winning composer Troels Folmann has once again infused Anniversary with the same magic present in Tomb Raider Legend, perfectly encapsulating each moment as it unfolds during game-play. From the playful accompaniments around Croft Manor to the overwhelming assault during the battle with T-Rex and the final conflict with Natla, Troels has once again scored an incredible soundtrack and I wouldn’t be surprised if he taps another BAFTA for his contribution to the overall success of Anniversary…”
